It is Solange's newest EP. And I've given it a good listen, over and over again. At first I was unsure if I liked it. The sound had promise, but it felt a little too washed over. I had to ask, is she hiding something? Is she maybe not that talented? I mean, why all the reverb? I want to hear her VOICE, man. Bring it up to the FRONT a little more.
But after each listen, the songs started to catch. I felt familiar with it from the get-go. I was brought back to a time when I was a little girl, dancing to Madonna in my bedroom. I heard echoes of Prince and traces of Cyndi Lauper. True rings true to the 1980s sound. I mean, it's practically identical. While track one smells of a cruel summer, and track two is reminiscent of a true love, the album is, in itself, original and creative. I find the sound comforting, more like an homage than a blatant rip-off. And maybe it's just because I was born to the era that Solange's sound is emulating that I think she and Dev did a damn good job, but who cares? The verdict's in: I like it.
Besides, Dev's got the whole Jean-Michel Basquiat/Terence Trent D'Arby look from the 80s goin' on, too.
